According the developers of Kodi at http://kodi.tv, the update from versions 17.2 Krypton is now deemed necessary due to a security issue with a malicious subtitle zip files.

Also, there are other fixes due to packaging of certain binary add-ons like PVR, visualization, and Inputstream. Apparently, they discovered it a bit late in the older releases of the Krypton media software.

So here is the list below of the fixes done in this release:

  • Allow backing out of fullscreen pictures by mapping longpress guesture
  • Quick fix for wake up command not being called in PVR power management
  • Use alternative method to check if platform updates have been installed on Windows
  • Set the minimum version in the code which is currently OSX 10.8
  • Fix possible security flaw which could abused .zip files which try to traverse to a parent directory
  • Use the correct ttc font from the video file for subtitles on Windows
  • Detect and delete zero-byte database files which causes crashes

Just to be clear on the security issue, it seems that it will only affect users that have actually enabled a subtitle download and then downloaded the particular zipped subtitles. Otherwise, it seems relatively safe if you haven't dabbled into that area.

1. Enable Apps from Unknown Sources

At your Amazon home screen

2. Install Downloader App
